April 24th, 2007 Big Red Roundtable: Post-Spring Game Edition
The guys over at BigRedNetwork.com asked me to participate in their roundtable discussion of the 2007 Spring Game. Here are my responses.
1. Keller or Ganz. Pick one, then give three reasons.
Keller. Ganz probably knows the offensive playbook better, but Keller gives you a pro-caliber QB that has much more upside in this offense. Keller's arm strength is superior and he showed more consistency in the Spring Game than Ganz.
2. The most impressive guy at the Spring Game.
Tough to pinpoint one player because several caught my attention. One player who I had to look up was Thomas Lawson. He had an impressive run early in the game, carrying multiple defenders. Unfortunately, he didn't get much action after that. Rickey Thenarse continues to be impressive in regards to the fire he plays with as well as his athletic ability. I think he'll be a good one for the Huskers. And finally, I'll mention Major Culbert. With the ongoing struggles of keeping our running backs healthy, Culbert may see some playing time during the season at the position. He showed flashes of something special playing on the white team offense going against the starting defense. Like I said though, it's tough to pinpoint one player, especially in a game with the format of the Spring Game.
3. If you were the Athletic Director, what would you do with the
proceeds?
If I were Steve Pederson, I would take the proceeds from the Spring Game and make a contribution in the name of the Athletic Department to the Athletic Department to pay down some of the stadium expansion debt.
4. Do 54,000 people show up at Nebraska's Spring Game because there
is really nothing else to do in Nebraska OR because we're more in love with our Huskers than anyone else is with their team. (living out of
state, I get to defend the idea that there's nothing else to do a
lot, I'm interested in hearing someone else's perspective)?
Alabama evidently had 90,000 at their spring game. Roll Tide fans are probably afraid Nick Saban will go Bob Huggins on them so they better see him while they can. To answer the question though, I think the reason we get 54,000 to Memorial Stadium on a less than glorious weather day is because football is still the number one attraction in the state. And after a bad winter, Husker fans come out of hibernation long enough to get a glimpse before taking a five month nap. Wake me up when football season starts.
5. When you heard or saw Marlon Lucky was injured, your first thought
was?
My initial thought was that God struck down Marlon Lucky because Nebraska is no longer his favorite team (Florida is) and because Doak Ostergard was fired.
6. Were you at all concerned by the fairly modest rushing performance overall by the Red team or is that a sign there's some depth on the defensive front seven?
It's hard to analyze the Spring Game because it's so scripted and controlled. My thoughts are that it was a chance to showcase the quarterbacks moreso than the running backs. Add to that the injuries that our running backs have suffered and I think that's why you saw less in the way of production on the ground. Let's be honest, everyone showed up to see Keller, just like they showed up two years ago to see Zac Taylor. With regards to the defensive line depth, I thought Brandon Johnson made a few good plays and it will be interesting to see how much he contributes this season.
7. Callahan called the receiving corps the strength of the team. Would you tend to agree with that or would you choose another aspect
(e.g. linebackers)?
I would agree that there is the more depth at wide receiver than any other position. When you have Holt, Henry, Brooks, and Erickson as third and fourth string WR's, that's a good problem to have. I don't see any other position except maybe defensive back that has as much depth. The problem with the DB's (besides Bowman's injury) is a lack of experience among some of the newcomers.
