Signing Day is here: NU's 2010 recruiting class breakdown

Nebraska’s 2010 football recruiting class is just about in the books, with 21 future Huskers signing on the dotted line today. Similar to the NU football season, the Huskers recruiting class gained momentum going into the close with the signing of four star prospects Corey Cooper and Brion Carnes to close out the class. Even though Owamagbe Odighizuwa, a five star defensive end from Portland, decided to go to UCLA, the Big Red finished strong.

Here’s how the class breaks down:

Offense - 10 players signed

Quarterbacks – 1 (Brion Carnes)
Offensive Lineman – 3 (Andrew Rodriguez, Mike Moudy, and Jermarcus Hardrick)
Running Backs – 2 (Braylon Heard and Kenny Bell)
Wide Receivers – 1 (Quincy Enunwa)
Tight Ends – 1 (Chase Harper)
Athletes – 2 (Tyler Evans and Bronson Marsh*)

* = Marsh is set to greyshirt, meaning he can’t be coached for a semester

Defense - 11 players signed

Defensive Ends – 4 (Donovan Vestal, Tobi Okuyemi, Walker Ashburn, and Jake Cotton)
Defensive Backs – 4 (Corey Cooper, Harvey Jackson, Joshua Mitchell, and Ciante Evans)
Defensive Tackles – 2 (Chase Rome and Jay Guy)
Linebackers – 1 (Lavonte David)

NU signed three junior college players in this class (Jermarcus Hardrick, Lavonte David, and Chase Harper). Harper has three years of eligibility remaining. Hardrick and David both have three years to play two for the Huskers.

At the end of signing day, the Huskers had jumped up to #23 nationally, thanks to the last minute signings of Corey Cooper and Brion Carnes. Both players are four star prospects by Rivals. Other Big 12 teams in the Top 25 for recruiting classes include: Texas (#3), Oklahoma (#7), Texas A&M (#15), and Missouri (#21).

Individual Player Profiles

Walker Ashburn – 6’3” 245 pound DE from River Ridge, LA. Three stars by Rivals and Scout. Other big schools offering Ashburn were LSU, Oklahoma State, and Stanford. Kenny Bell - 6’2” 175 pound running back/athlete from Boulder, CO. Three stars by Rivals and Scout. Brion Carnes - 6’0” 180 pound quarterback from Bradenton, FL. Rated as a four star recruit by Rivals and three stars by Scout (they can never agree it seems). Brion is the nephew of Husker legend and fellow Brandenton product, Tommie Frazier. Carnes was originally a South Florida commit, but with the coaching changes there, his recruitment was reopened. Along with Corey Cooper, who you’ll read about next, Carnes represents somewhat of a signing day coup for Pelini and the Huskers. Carnes hometown paper profiles him here.

Corey Cooper - 6’2” 203 pound defensive back from Maywood, IL. Rated as a four star prospect by Rivals and Scout, Cooper committed to Nebraska today and represents one of the bigger “gets” in this year’s class. Corey chose the Huskers over a litter of big time programs, including Notre Dame, Florida State, Tennessee, and Arizona. A one-time Illinois commit, Cooper is talked about in this ESPN blog posting.

Jake Cotton - 6’7” 265 pound defensive end from Lincoln, NE. The son of NU line coach Barney Cotton and brother of current Husker tight end Ben Cotton. Rated two stars by Rivals and Scout, Jake committed November 9th and took his official visit to Nebraska on January 15th. The Omaha World Herald reports on Cotton.

Lavonte David - 6’1” 215 pound linebacker from Fort Scott Community College, who originally hails from Miami. Rated four stars by Rivals and three by Scout, David was also recruited by Tennessee, Baylor, Kansas, and Kansas State. David joins teammate Jermarcus Hardrick in the 2010 class, as well as former Fort Scott teammate and current Husker wide receiver Brandon Kinnie in Lincoln. Lavonte committed to the Huskers on December 9th and visited NU’s campus on November 20th. DoubleExtraPoint.com takes a look at the two Fort Scott commitments in this article.

Quincy Enunwa - 6’2” 200 pound wide receiver from Moreno Valley, CA. Rated three stars by Rivals and two by Scout, Enunwa was also offered by Washington State. Quincy committed to NU on October 26th and took his official visit ten days prior to giving his verbal. Husker Extra takes a look at this future Husker.

Tyler Evans - 6’2” 180 pound athlete from Waverly, NE. Evans is rated as a two star prospect by Rivals and given three stars by Scout. Tyler was also offered a scholarship at Ohio and Princeton. He committed to Nebraska on August 5th and took an official visit on November 20th. The Omaha World Herald takes a look at Tyler Evans in this article.

Rated as a three star prospect by Rivals and Scout, this Evans was recruited by Arizona State, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Utah. Evans to the Huskers on September 8th and visited Lincoln on September 25th. Husker Extra takes a look at this future Husker.

Rated a three star prospect by Rivals and Scout, Guy received interest from about 20 schools, including Michigan, Missouri, UCLA, Ole Miss, and Arizona. Jay committed to NU on November 8th, two days after visiting Lincoln. The Houston Chronicle takes a look at Jay Guy.

Jermarcus Hardrick - 6’7” 315 pound offensive lineman from Fort Scott, KS. Rated as a four star prospect by Rivals and Scout, Hardrick joins Fort Scott Community College teammate Lavonte David in the 2010 class. Hardrick was also offered a scholarship by Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, and South Florida. Jermarcus is profiled in this Omaha World Herald article. He committed to NU on December 9th and visited Lincoln on November 20th.

Chase Harper - 6’5” 251 pound tight end from Corsicana, TX. Rated as a four star prospect by Rivals and three stars by Scout, Harper comes to NU via Navarro Junior College. As mentioned earlier, Harper has three years to play three at Nebraska. Chase was also recruited by Miami, Kansas State, Baylor, and Iowa State. NebraskaStatePaper.com takes a look at this big-time JUCO tight end. Even though the Huskers are currently stacked at the tight end position, the coaches couldn’t pass up a chance to land what they see as a top notch recruit.

Braylon Heard - 5’11” 180 pound running back from Cardinal Mooney High in Youngstown, OH. Yep, Heard hails from the same high school as the Pelinis. Rated as a four star prospect by Rivals and three stars by Scout, Braylon was originally a West Virginia verbal commit before switching over to the Huskers on December 20th. He was also recruited by Ohio State, Penn State, as well as the powerhouses of the Big East. Big Red Network takes a look at Braylon Heard.

Harvey Jackson - 6’2” 185 pound defensive back from Missouri City, TX. Rated as a three star by Rivals and four by Scout, Harvey was also courted by Arizona State, Duke, Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Utah. He committed on September 6th, two days after visiting Lincoln. Read the Lincoln Journal Star’s blurb about Jackson here.

Bronson Marsh - 6’0” 200 pound athlete from Millard South High School in Omaha, NE. Rated as a two star prospect by Rivals and Scout, Marsh won’t actually join the team until semester break next year. Commonly known as a “greyshirt” he won’t be coachable until joins the team half way through the season. Bronson quarterbacked his high school team to the Class A State Championship this past season. He decided against a scholarship from UNO to chase his dream of playing for the Big Red. The Omaha World Herald delves into just who is Bronson Marsh.

Joshua Mitchell - 5’11 165 defensive back from Corona, CA. Rated as a three star recruit by Rivals and Scout, Mitchell also had interest from Colorado State, Washington State, and Idaho. Joshua committed to the Huskers on November 8th, a week before he actually visited campus. This DoubleExtraPoint.com article talks about Mitchell.

Mike Moudy - 6’7 291 pound offensive lineman from Castle Rock, CO. Rated as a three star prospect by Rivals and four stars by Scout, Moudy passed up Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado State, and Stanford in choosing the Huskers. Moudy was one of the earlier commits in the class, giving Bo Pelini his verbal on April 18th, right after he filed his taxes (one would hope). Husker Extra profiles Mike Moudy in their Future Husker series.

Tobi Okuyemi - 6’3” 250 pound defensive end from Plymouth, MN. Rated as a three star prospect by Rivals and Scout, Tobi was also sought by Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Vanderbilt. Okuyemi committed to NU on November 8th, two days after visiting campus. Husker Extra profiles Tobi Okuyemi here.

Andrew Rodriguez - 6’6” 298 pound offensive lineman from Aurora, NE. Rated as a four star prospect by Rivals and Scout, Rodriguez committed to the Huskers so early (11/25/08), he wasn’t recruited by anyone else. Andrew was invited to the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, a game that spotlights the brightest high school prospects in the country. Husker Extra profiles Rodriguez in this Future Husker article.

Chase Rome - 6’3” 290 pound defensive tackle from Columbia, MO. Rated as a four star recruit by Rivals and Scout, Chase was heavily recruited from coast-to-coast by schools including Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa, UCLA, South Carolina, Michigan, Florida and Wisconsin. He committed to the Huskers on October 9th, roughly two weeks after visiting Memorial Stadium. John Papuchis was the lead recruiter for Rome and a big reason Chase switched his verbal commitment from Oklahoma State to Nebraska. Husker Extra takes a look at Chase Rome in this article. In case that’s not enough reading about Rome, he even has his own website.

Donovan Vestal - 6’5” 240 pound defensive end out of Arlington, TX. Rated as a three star by Rivals and Scout, Vestal was recruited by Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Arizona, among other schools. He committed to the Huskers on August 22nd and visited two weeks later. The Omaha World Herald takes a look at a kid who always wanted to be a Blackshirt.

There you have it, the 2010 Nebraska football recruiting class. Again, it’s important to note the key players that committed to the Huskers today (Cooper and Carnes), which give the Big Red even more momentum heading into next season. While only several of the newest Huskers figure to play an important role next season, Bo Pelini and his staff continue to build a strong foundation for the future of Husker football.

Sounds like a solid recruiting class. Who cares if Nebraska didn\t land Owa? Good luck to him at UCLA. I guess the kid really wants to go play for a crooked coach who is well known for his long list of NCAA violations at every coaching stop.
