Husker practice report, Good Friday
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Husker football practice today.
Several observations from practice...
#1 - I was amazed at how short Ron Brown's shorts were. Not quite Dennis Rodman short, but definitely of the high school gym teacher Bike short vintage. Old school if you like. But enough about fashion.
#2 - If Zac Lee is 6'2" then I'm nine feet tall. Easily the shortest of our quarterbacks, Lee is also the fastest. My concern is his ability to throw the ball over the defensive line. I'm sure they said the same thing about KU's Todd Reesing though. Zac has good arm strength and knows the offense better than the other Husker QB's, so he'll be the starter.
#3 - Cody Green and Latravis Washington are both big quarterbacks. Washington is a converted linebacker with a rifle for an arm. Green, the freshman phenom also has good arm strength and good mobility. We're probably seeing the future of Husker football in Green. I'd like to see both Green and Washington get some playing time this season.
#4 - Roy Helu was out of practice again, although he was milling around. He has put on noticeable muscle mass, but from earlier reports, he's still as elusive as he was last season.
#5 - Ndamukong Suh is the leanest big man I've seen. Not much fat on that boy at all. Pierre Allen looked good on the D-line as well.
#6 - The coaches enthusiasm and fire is something to watch. Quick with a pat on the back for good plays and equally quick with constructive criticism. All I know is that I wouldn't want to get on the bad side of Carl Pelini, or Bo for that matter. Barney Cotton yells all the time, so I imagine the O-line gets used to it.
#7 - Nearly every one of the Husker coaches look like they could still play. Gilmore, Brown, Ekeler, and Sanders especially.
#8 - Other players that caught my eye were #28 at running back, Austin Jones, and #1 at the cornerback spot, Alfonzo Dennard. Both of these sophomores stood out in my mind. Matt May on defense was another guy who had a good practice. Numerous "atta-boys" were directed Matt's way.
